From our workshop

The first Retina 15-inch is thin for its era, and the glued battery and fused display make it harder to work on than older MacBook Pros. We see a lot of screens with blotchy coating wear, which only a panel replacement truly fixes.

What faults do you fix on the MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch (Mid 2012)?

  • Battery swelling (the battery is glued in)
  • SSD failures and data loss
  • “staingate” – the anti-reflective screen coating wearing off in patches
  • NVIDIA graphics faults (Apple once ran a repair programme for early Retina models)

Repairs and upgrades for this model

  • Screen and display repairs – including replacing panels with worn anti-reflective coating
  • Battery replacement, including swollen batteries
  • Keyboard and trackpad repair
  • Charging and port repairs
  • SSD upgrades – one of the best-value upgrades for this model
  • Liquid damage treatment and logic board repair

Can you recover data from my MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch (Mid 2012)?

The storage in this model can be taken out, which is good news if the Mac itself has died: we can remove the drive and recover your files directly, or move them to a new SSD. If the drive itself has failed, our data recovery lab handles clicking and undetected drives too.

Is it worth repairing my MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch (Mid 2012)?

It stops at macOS 10.15 Catalina, so we look carefully at value. Cheap fixes like an SSD upgrade or a new battery are well worth doing; expensive board repairs usually are not.
