Its SSD uses an older connector than the 2013-onwards Airs, so upgrades need the correct 2012-type drive.

Can you recover data from my MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012)?
Because the drive is removable, a dead logic board rarely means lost files – we take the drive out and copy everything off. Failed drives go to our in-house data recovery service.
